Orthodontic Excellence

Oral Orthopedics

Oral orthopedics is the name for a wide range of treatment areas that are related to the muscles, bones, and oral structures of the head and neck. In other words, orthopedics deals with muscles and bones, while orthodontics is primarily concerned with tooth movement and dental function. Dysfunction, or abnormal function, can result in problems in the jaw joints (TMJ and/or arthritis), chewing muscles (related pain) and associated muscles of the head and neck. Not only can this dysfunction cause people to suffer from headache and head pain, but snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea as well.

Dr. Zipkin believes that one must thoroughly understand all phases of dental and oral orthopedic problems in order to properly treat any one of them. All are inter-connected.

Why Orthodontics?

Orthodontic improvement, by itself or in combination with other dental procedures, has as its goal better overall health, digestion and dento-facial cosmetics. A good working bite will increase the probability of keeping the teeth throughout your lifetime. Many scientific studies have found that healthy, attractive smiles are at the core of expression, self esteem and individual success.

Our practice provides highly individualized care in a warm, comfortable atmosphere. You will be treated with respect and kindness and a helpful attitude by everyone on our team. We listen to all your needs.

We share a commitment to excellence on every level. Our office is state-of-the-art, utilizing computerized diagnostic and administrative applications, as well as end-of-treatment prediction and growth analysis. We feature high-tech equipment and appliance sterility for your safety during orthodontic treatment.

Over the past 40 years, having treated thousands of patients, it is clear that excellence requires continual education and application of the very latest in medical/dental knowledge. We aspire to staying current with the latest in orthodontic technologies to make your outcome as easy as possible.

We realize that you would choose excellence in health care and cosmetic results if you could afford it. We do everything we can to offer individually-affordable payment plans and we will accept insurance benefits as part of the payments. We can even arrange for multi-year payment plans with no money down, and no interest as well.

Why Braces?

For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. After your braces come off, you’ll feel more self-confident. But there’s much more! Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay, worsen gum disease, and lead to tooth loss. Other orthodontic problems can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing function, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone that supports the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints. These can lead to chronic headaches and face or neck pain. Treatment by an orthodontist can be less costly than the additional care required to treat dental problems arising as a result of orthodontic problems.

1-Braces (Fixed Appliances)
Orthodontic appliances can be made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be attached and bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position. This is a great time to wear braces!

You can choose brackets that are clear or metal. You can choose the color of the ties that hold the wire in the brackets. The most modern braces have “doors” that secure the wires. Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be, and the latest materials move teeth faster and with less discomfort to patients.

2-Invisible (nearly) – Please click on our Invisalign Page For Details

3-Invisible Braces on the Tongue-Side of Teeth
Methods for this treatment are similar to regular braces (brackets and wires) but much more difficult, as access to the tongue side is much more limited.

4- Removable Appliances
Many minor tooth movements may be treated this way.

After Braces or Aligners… Now What?

Retainers
Everyone seems to have heard of retainers but what do they do? They are orthodontic ‘appliances’ (everything is an ‘appliance’), either attached to teeth or removable, that retain the tooth positions. They may be called maintainers.

During treatment, teeth move because the bone that holds them ‘softens’ to allow the movement. Teeth get loose but don’t fall out. The bone re-hardens and the teeth become firm again. That’s the miracle of orthodontic movement. It is possible to move teeth one half inch within the bone, and they will still remain healthy!

After all that movement, the body needs to accept the new positions healthfully so that ‘going back’ to a previous position is avoided. Dr. Zipkin will advise how, when, and for how long you should be in retention.
